International Forum on Black Soil Conservation and Utilization Convenes

The International Forum on Black Soil Conservation and Utilization was held in Changchun, capital of Jilin Province of China on July 22-23, 2021. The Forum was jointly organized by the MARA, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the People’s Government of Jilin Province.

Minister Tang Renjian and CAS President Hou Jianguo delivered speeches via video link. Mr. Jing Junhai, Secretary of the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee, and Mr. Han Jun, Governor of Jilin Province, addressed the forum. Vice Minister Ma Youxiang presided over the opening ceremony and delivered remarks.

Minister Tang pointed out that black soil is a precious soil resource that protects the ecosystem, serves as a natural gene bank, and mitigates the emission of greenhouse gases. It is a common responsibility for human beings to conserve and make good use of black soil, special gift from Mother Nature. Its conservation speaks volume in securing global food security and conserving the foundation for sustainable development.

Minister Tang stated that Chinaattaches great importance to the conservation and utilization of black soil. In the principle of integrating conservation with utilization, China has adopted a series of efficient measures to conserve black soil, which earns a reputation of “panda of arable lands.” In the engineering, agronomy and biology perspectives, China will continue to introduce various measures to improve the quality of black soil. China is willing to cooperate with all parties to promote conservation of black soil in quantity, quality and ecology, hence to preserve the fertility of the “panda of arable lands.”

Officials attending the Forum include agricultural ministers from the United States, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil and Argentina, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, and the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, either via video link or video messages. They expressed the willingness to further work with China in research, conservation practices and the sustainable utilization of black soil, to ensure food security and promote the green development of agriculture globally.

The Forum focused on the role of black soil in ensuring food security, multi-functions and sustainable development of black soil and conservation farming. Jilin Province also held the launch ceremony for the first Black Soil Protection Day.

More than 200 participants attended the Forum, including delegates from relevant countries and world-renowned experts in soil.
